Red Ginseng reduces sports related inflammation.

RunnerA study was undertaken to discover what effect, if any, the herb Panax-Red Ginseng would have on the damage & inflammation caused by uphill running on a treadmill. Red Ginseng has traditionally been used as an overall tonic and adaptogenic – it is believed to decrease cellular sensitivity to stress.

The inflammation markers interleukin 6 and creatine kinase were measured at set intervals, and it was found that the 2 were significantly decreased in the group given Red Ginseng, as opposed to the control group, meaning that the inflammation produced by the body as a result of the exercise had been limited. Plasma glucose & insulin responses were also reduced, providing evidence that Red Ginseng may also be of use to increase insulin sensitivity.
